Stress fracture postponement

My body isn't going to let me do this just yet.  I'm no expert, but from everything I've been reading online while stuck in this motel room I have either a shin splint on my left leg or more likely a stress fracture. Either way recovery is going to take weeks if not longer.  My daughter, Casey, is coming to pick me up here in Lincoln City before it gets too crazy with Eclipse traffic.  I fully intend to rejoin the trail at this point as soon as possible, either this fall or next spring. I've seen some amazing things and want to see the rest!  I appreciate your interest and will keep you posted.

Forced layovers

Made at least 15 miles yesterday and am at well over the 100 Mark now.  4 miles of that was uphill on Highway 101 with traffic whizzing by followed by 1.2 on an u
Stealth camp on Cascade head
phill Gravel Road on Cascade head. What a nightmare. At least the highway. And I was bitten by a yappy little dog on the beach who I tried to say hello to!  He was not a good boy. Fortunately I found the trail on Cascade head with no problem and found a nice campsite about a mile down where I spent a very restful evening.  I heard a bull elk whistling nearby and shortly after a cow elk and two calves slipped through the forest not far from my Camp. I don't think they even knew I was there.  This afternoon, however, finds me becalmed in Lincoln City. I was on the beach in front of the Inn at Spanish Head When I look down at my bum leg and decided the swelling was just too much and I needed to stop. I am now in a very nice mom and pop motel and will probably be here for two nights. I'm icing and elevating and generally trying to stay off it. The hardest part will be not moving around. When I get bored I go walking. Better to try to fix this thing now than let it ruin my whole walk though.  Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

Waiting for Paul and Alex at Pelican brewing in Pacific City.  They will ferry me across the mouth of the nestucca river.  This morning Paul took me across the mouth of Sand lake since the tide was too high when I got there  yesterday.  I stealth camped there last night.
Not sure where I'll sleep tonight.  Maybe somewhere on Cascade head.  A big, big thanks to Paul and Alex for being my personal ferry service!!  Man, what great friends they are.

Made it to Paul's house a day early on a bum knee and after a bit of unpleasant road walking.  Was ferried across Nehalem Bay by a local marina service, then across Tillamook Bay by Paul and Alex.  The ride in Paul's Hobie Adventure Island sailboat was fun and pretty exciting.  I think it was my first time in a sailboat.  Today they will canoe ferry me across Netarts Bay from where I hope to make Pacific City tonight.  That we will include crossing Cape Lookout and the mouth of Sand lake.

Having an IPA in very crowded Seaside after 18 miles to get here on Bum left leg.  4 miles to go before I sleep on Tillamook Head but I just ordered my 2nd beer and this bar stool feels better and better.  Did I tell you this isn't a wilderness hike?  Just ordered fish and chips to go for dinner. May use one of the backpacker shelters on Tillamook Head since rain is forecast.  More to come!

Welcome

 I leave very soon!

Next Saturday Diane will drop me off at the Columbia River South Jetty to start the walk south, down the flat beach past the Peter Iredale wreck and beyond to a night either on the beach somewhere north of Gearhart after 13 or 14 miles or at the Seaside International Hostel after about 18 miles.

I've been planning and conditioning since January or February.  My thanks to Anita Katz for the loan of a nice lightweight pack.  I've had 30 to 35 lbs. of water in it for the conditioning hikes but expect my actual trail weight to be more like 25 lbs.

Thanks also to Paul Norman and Alex McNeily.  They will be at Paul's Netarts Bay vacation home at the right time to ferry me across Tillamook Bay, Netarts Bay, and the mouth of the Nestucca River in one of Paul's boats, saving me many boring, dangerous miles of road walking.  Paul is even hosting me for the night at his house when I come through Netarts.  It will be great to see those guys at Garibaldi when we meet for the first ferry.  Good thing we're all boaters!

I'm feeling pretty good about this whole thing but will keep you updated on whether these early concerns turn out to be of any real consequence:
-loose sand
-headwinds
-having to wait for low tide in some places
-wading streams and the mouth of Sand Lake (I'm not bringing trekking poles or a staff)
-the narrow tunnel at Heceta Head
-road walking (even with the help of Paul and Alex there will still be a lot of it).

As Murray says, "Stay Tuned!"
